Nobody plans “a birthday party”. They plan a mermaid party, or a dinosaur party, or the one where everything has to be pink. Here is what candy does for each of them — and what it costs.
Start with the theme, not the sweets
Every parent planning a party in Singapore has already picked a theme before they think about food. The cake follows the theme. The balloons follow the theme. Then the sweet table gets whatever the supermarket had, in colours that fight everything else on the table.
That is the gap worth closing, and it is the cheapest thing on the table to get right. Candy is the only element you can colour-match exactly to a theme without paying a designer, because you are choosing the colours yourself.
Candy by party theme
Under the sea and mermaid parties
The easiest theme to do well, because the colour story is already decided: aqua, blush pink, ocean blue and lilac, ideally with a pearly swirl through them. Our Seashell Pops are shaped like scallop shells and come in exactly those shades, which makes them do double duty as favours and as table decoration. Fan them out in a jar and the jar becomes part of the styling.
Woodland and animal parties
Woodland is having a long moment in Singapore and it is well served by shaped lollipops rather than colour. Paw prints, doggy bones and piggy faces read instantly as “animals” to a four-year-old, and they photograph better on a rustic table than anything wrapped in foil. Browse the lollipop range for the shapes.
Unicorn and rainbow parties
The trap here is going all-pink. A unicorn table is much stronger with a full rainbow running through it, so favour multi-colour lollipops and mixed jars over a single pastel. It also solves the problem of children who have firm opinions about which colour is theirs.
Dinosaur, cars and “not-pink” parties
Harder to buy off the shelf, and where custom candy earns its keep. A batch in two bold colours — jungle green and orange, or black and red — reads as the theme without needing a dinosaur-shaped anything. This is also the easiest way to make a sweet table look deliberate rather than assembled.
Pastel, minimalist and “grown-up” first birthdays
For the parties styled for the photographs as much as the child, the answer is restraint: two colours, one flavour, clear jars, no printed wrappers. Custom candy with the birthday child’s name running through every piece does more work here than any amount of decoration.
Custom candy with their name in it
The version people remember is the one with a name inside the sweet. Not printed on a wrapper — actually formed inside the candy, so it is still there wherever you break it.
- A first name, up to six letters, reads clearly across the face of a piece
- Up to three colours, which is where you match the theme
- One flavour per batch
- Minimum order 4kg, from S$60/kg, dropping to S$46/kg on larger orders
- No GST — the price you see is the price you pay
4kg sounds like a lot until you divide it: packed into 70g bags it is around 58 favours, which covers most class parties with some left for the grandparents. You can build one and see a live mock-up and price on the Design Your Candy page.
The timing bit people get wrong
Standard lead time is two to three weeks, and the clock starts when payment is settled and you have approved your mock-up — not when you first enquire. We also only make candy Monday to Wednesday, so an order confirmed on a Thursday will not be made until the following Monday however roomy the calendar looks. Orders needed within a week carry a S$100 express charge.
For a Saturday party, aim to have your design confirmed and paid a clear three weeks before. For ready-made sweets from the online shop there is no such constraint — that is the route if the party is this weekend.
One thing worth checking before you order
If you are inviting a whole class, someone in it probably has a dietary restriction. Our candy can be produced with halal-friendly ingredients, which means one bowl everyone can eat from rather than a separate “alternative” bowl that singles a child out. Do contact us to confirm suitability for your specific order — and our guide to halal-friendly candy covers what to check with any supplier.
A quick planning order
- Pick the theme, and pull two or three colours from it
- Count the children, add a third for siblings, parents and spares
- Decide favours-in-a-bag or a sweet table — bags need packaging, a table does not
- Work backwards three weeks from the party date
- Order the shaped lollipops that suit the theme, and custom candy for the named pieces
Ready-made options are in the online shop. For anything with a name or specific colours in it, start on the Design Your Candy page.
